Details about Snow Leopard

On August 28th, 2009 you can make your Intel-powered Apple computer a whole lot smarter. OS X 10.6 – also know as Snow Leopard – arrives in stores on the 28th and it brings with it a grocery list of new software innovations to make your Mac faster, easier to use, and cooler than ever.
You’ll find solid new core technologies and refinements to over 90% of the 1000 projects that make up OS X.
Let’s take a look at what’s new and why you’ll want it!
What’s New?
Welcome to 64-bit.
Most Apple computers have been shipping with 64 bit processors for over two years. At the heart of Snow Leopard you’ll find updated 64-bit versions of all the core programs. Finder, Mail, iCal®, iChat® and Safari have all been recast with powerful 64-bit versions.

Snow Leopard’s support for 64-bit processors lets your computer make use of large amounts of RAM, as well as increasing performance and improving security. Snow Leopard does all of this while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications. Check out the online RAM finder to add more RAM to your Mac.

Easier to use.
Exposé has always been the easiest and most beautiful way to manage your programs on your Mac – simply hit a key or slide your mouse into a hot corner and you’ve got access to everything that you’re doing, all at once. The new Exposé gives you an easy to use Dock icon, as well as ordering your windows in an organized grid – making it even simpler to find the stuff you need.
Stacks have also evolved with a brand new look; they’re scrollable, letting you see even more of your folders without having to delve into the Finder.
Speedier than ever.
OS X 10.6 is faster than ever. You’ll notice snapper performance in the Finder, faster access to your files and folder, and even Mail opens and sends quicker. Safari 64-bit is up to four times faster than previous versions. Time Machine backs-up your data up to 80% faster, and your initial Time Machine backup will take less time than ever before.
Wake up and shutdown times are lightning quick. Thanks to updates to system files, your computer will wake up up to 2 times faster than before and shut down 1.8 times faster. That means more time getting stuff done and less time waiting.
That’s one slender Snow Leopard.
Apple’s taken the time to optimize the code in Snow Leopard and reduced the amount of space required for the operating system. Installing Snow Leopard on an existing Max will reduce the amount of space needed for operating system files by up to 7GB. That’s enough space for over 1700 songs or a few thousand pictures!

Advanced multi-core support.
Chances are your Mac has a multi-core processor. Grand Central, the new technology at the heart of OS X 10.6, is designed to leverage multi-core systems in order to get the best performance out of all of your programs. Grand Central takes control of the processor instead of handing that control off to the programs that you’re running – offering better performance with more efficiency.

QuickTime X
QuickTime player gets a facelift and a complete overhaul under the hood. The new look is streamlined and smart, giving you full access to controls without cluttering the screen. Under the hood you’ve got instant uploads to YouTube and MobileMe, as well as a handy HTTP streaming mode for streaming online video.
Why do you want it?
It should be clear: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is a fantastic evolution of OS X. Between the development of state-of-the-art core technologies and hundreds of refinements, OS X 10.6 will help you get the most out of your Mac with no drawbacks. Get your copy and unleash the power of your Mac!

iPhone 3GS Exploding ?
Apple iPhone 3GS smartphones have reportedly been exploding around Europe, in what Apple is calling isolated incidents. According to some news outlets, in at least one case Apple has offered to reimburse an owner, with the agreement that the terms and existence of the settlement were to remain confidential.
Exploding iPhones?
Explosions are the latest problem attributed to the Apple iPhone 3GS, which since its June arrival has reportedly overheated to the point of discoloration, had issues with quickly draining batteries and suffered from overly delicate screens.
For now, the allegedly exploding iPhones seem isolated to Europe.
“Apple Inc. is investigating media reports that one or more of the company’s iPhones have exploded in Europe, a European Commission spokeswoman said on Tuesday,” Reuters reported Aug. 18.
The spokesperson, Helen Kearns, reportedly told those gathered at a news briefing that Apple is “trying to get more information on the specific details of those incidents, and they will do tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause.”
Apple, for its part, is calling the incidents isolated but has said it is looking into them.
“For the cases which have been reported in the media, Apple [is] trying to get more information on the details of the incidents and will do tests as necessary to investigate the possible cause,” Apple reportedly told the Commission in a statement, according to MacWorld.
In one incident, wrote Macworld, a French teenager claimed to have hurt his eye after his girlfriend’s iPhone made a hissing sound and then its glass touch-screen shattered.
A 47-year-old UK man said his daughter’s iPhone also hissed and then exploded. And in the Netherlands, an iPhone left in a car reportedly caused a fire that burned the vehicle’s seat.
SlashGear-running an image presumably of the burnt car seat—additionally reported that Apple has tried to keep chatter about these incidents to a minimum by giving refunds to the owners of the destroyed devices, so long as they keep the terms of the agreement confidential.
“[Apple] did offer the Liverpool owner a [$271] refund with the proviso that, in accepting it, those involved were to ‘agree that you will keep the terms and existence of this settlement agreement completely confidential,’ with the understanding that any breach of confidentiality ‘may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties,’” wrote SlashGear, which went on to report that the owner did not accept the terms.
The Best Apple Products.
2913 people have voted there favorite Apple products. The results are fairly conclusive with approximately 1 in every 3 saying their favorite product is their iPhone. The love affairs with the iPhone are set to continue if the reviews of the iPhone 3GS are anything to go by.
In fact, handheld devices accounted for more than 50% of all the votes with the iPod range being the second most popular Apple product. I’m sure Apple will be encouraged with these figures with the forthcoming release of their tablet just around the corner.
The most popular laptop is the Macbook which took in 10% of all the votes while the most popular desktop was, unsurprisingly, the iMac which only managed to take in 7% of all the votes.
The least popular products are the Mac Mini and Mac Pro. Personally I believe the Mac Mini is the most undervalued Apple product to ever be released and a few others share that opinion with me too.
However, the figures don’t lie! What do you think? Are the figures a fair reflection of popularity.

Did Apple cover up Fire Hazards ?
An investig
ation by Seattle television station, KIRO 7, has revealed that an “alarming” number of iPod’s have (allegedly) been bursting into flames and injuring people – and that Apple has apparently been trying to cover up the story.
Scary.
“It took more than 7-months for KIRO 7 Consumer Investigator Amy Clancy to get her hands on documents concerning Apple’s iPods from the Consumer Product Safety Commission because Apple’s lawyers filed exemption after exemption. In the end, the CPSC released more than 800 pages which reveal, for the very first time, a comprehensive look that shows, on a number of occasions, iPods have suddenly burst into flames, started to smoke, and even burned their owners.”
One woman was burned on the chest while running when her iPod Shuffle, which was clipped to her shirt, overheated. The woman reportedly contacted Apple and was told her burn was “an isolated incident.” This is not, as KIRO 7 discovered, exactly true.
Simply by going online, the station found “plenty” of complaints about iPods overheating.
Also, this month in Japan, a warning was issued regarding certain iPod Nano models, after several, overheated and sparked. The report cites a total of 19 related accidents.
When KIRO’s Clancy finally received the reports they revealed 15 burn and fire-related incidents blamed by iPod owners on their iPods. After one child was burned, her mother complained and was reportedly told by Apple that they knew nothing of any danger, but the records are said to show otherwise.
“The complaints concern various iPod models, some charging at the time, some not. Some were older models, some brand new.”
My house, like many, is very reliant on the iPod. I can barely remember life without it. Now I have to worry about it bursting into flames? This does not make me happy.
To put things into perspective, there are over 175 million sold and only a handful are (allegedly) catching fire, but still, one is too many.
A “fire scientist” told KIRO that the iPods’ lithium ion batteries could be the source of the problem. “Millions of lithium ion batteries were recalled by Dell and Apple in 2006 because over-heating problems in laptop computers caused fires.”
This is a hazard in all iPods:
iPod Touch 1st and 2nd gen
iPod Classic
iPod Nano
iPod Shuffle
So, far, iPods are not being recalled.
The New PS3
There will be a new PS3 in stores on September 1st. The new PS3 will be known as the PS3 Slim. The PS3 Slim is 32% thinner , 36% lighter and uses 34% less energy then the original PS3.The Cool thing about it is that it is only $299 for the 120 GB better then the 60 GB XBOX 360 selling at $299. BEAT THAT MICROSOFT !!
More affordable $299 price; slimmer, more compact design with quieter operation; all games in high-definition; easy-to-use interface; doubles as a Blu-ray and upscaling DVD player; built-in Wi-Fi; 120GB hard drive; HDMI output with 1080p support; no external power supply; built-in Web browser; free online gaming service
The bad: Lacks backward support for PS2 games; no infrared port means non-Bluetooth universal remotes aren’t compatible; online gaming, media, and commerce options still aren’t as fully developed as Xbox Live, though they’re getting better.
The bottom line: With a smaller design, more energy-efficient operation, lower price tag, and built-in Blu-ray and multimedia capabilities, the PS3 Slim delivers a compelling package for an affordable price.

iPod Touch Cutting Into Handheld Game Market
iPhone and iPod Touch games are a booming business in the App Store, but how do they stand up against the big daddies of the handheld game market?
The Nintendo DS and Sony PSP boast huge install bases of about 70 million and 35 million, respectively, and a robust game library featuring well-known, high-quality franchises; will they ever feel the competitive heat from Apple? According to Michael Pachter, managing director at Wedbush Morgan Securities and a top game industry analyst, that’s actually a fait accompli.
“iPod Touch game sales are already cutting into the handheld market, particularly at the low end,” Pachter told me by email. “The iPod Touch’s market share will continue to grow, I suppose to around 10 percent to 15 percent of all handheld game sales.” Pachter sees the Touch as a more direct competitor to the DS and PSP lines, “as prices come down and parents begin to view it as a substitute” for those handhelds. The iPhone, by contrast, is less of a threat, he argued, “as it requires a relatively expensive data service plan, which most parents are reluctant to fund for children under 18.”
For Pachter, the crucial challenge for the iPod Touch as a game platform is pricing. “The sticking point is whether we’ll see these games offered at $9.99 or at $29.99. If at the lower price, the developers/publishers would take a profit hit; if at the higher price, the popularity of the iPod Touch as a gaming device will suffer.” (Currently most of the top-selling App Store titles, even from major game publishers, sell for well under $10.)
At the moment, Pachter noted, Sony and Nintendo have access to better games, including exclusive first-party titles that will never show up in the App Store; this gives both companies a distinct competitive advantage over Apple: “Everyone who owns a DS or PSP is a potential game customer,” as he puts it, “while only a fraction of iPod Touch owners will buy expensive games.”
That said, Pachter still believes the iPod Touch’s expanding market and lower prices “will ultimately make a dent in the PSP and DS software markets.” The question is whether it’s supplementing the existing handheld market, or cannibalizing it.
