Details about Snow Leopard

heading_en

On August 28th, 2009 you can make your Intel-powered Apple computer a whole lot smarter. OS X 10.6 – also know as Snow Leopard – arrives in stores on the 28th and it brings with it a grocery list of new software innovations to make your Mac faster, easier to use, and cooler than ever.

You’ll find solid new core technologies and refinements to over 90% of the 1000 projects that make up OS X.

Let’s take a look at what’s new and why you’ll want it!

What’s New?

Welcome to 64-bit.
Most Apple computers have been shipping with 64 bit processors for over two years. At the heart of Snow Leopard you’ll find updated 64-bit versions of all the core programs. Finder, Mail, iCal®, iChat® and Safari have all been recast with powerful 64-bit versions.

Snow Leopard’s support for 64-bit processors lets your computer make use of large amounts of RAM, as well as increasing performance and improving security. Snow Leopard does all of this while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications. Check out the online RAM finder to add more RAM to your Mac.

Easier to use.

Exposé has always been the easiest and most beautiful way to manage your programs on your Mac – simply hit a key or slide your mouse into a hot corner and you’ve got access to everything that you’re doing, all at once. The new Exposé gives you an easy to use Dock icon, as well as ordering your windows in an organized grid – making it even simpler to find the stuff you need.

Stacks have also evolved with a brand new look; they’re scrollable, letting you see even more of your folders without having to delve into the Finder.

Speedier than ever.

OS X 10.6 is faster than ever. You’ll notice snapper performance in the Finder, faster access to your files and folder, and even Mail opens and sends quicker. Safari 64-bit is up to four times faster than previous versions. Time Machine backs-up your data up to 80% faster, and your initial Time Machine backup will take less time than ever before.

Wake up and shutdown times are lightning quick. Thanks to updates to system files, your computer will wake up up to 2 times faster than before and shut down 1.8 times faster. That means more time getting stuff done and less time waiting.

That’s one slender Snow Leopard.

Apple’s taken the time to optimize the code in Snow Leopard and reduced the amount of space required for the operating system. Installing Snow Leopard on an existing Max will reduce the amount of space needed for operating system files by up to 7GB. That’s enough space for over 1700 songs or a few thousand pictures!

Advanced multi-core support.

Chances are your Mac has a multi-core processor. Grand Central, the new technology at the heart of OS X 10.6, is designed to leverage multi-core systems in order to get the best performance out of all of your programs. Grand Central takes control of the processor instead of handing that control off to the programs that you’re running – offering better performance with more efficiency.

QuickTime X

QuickTime player gets a facelift and a complete overhaul under the hood. The new look is streamlined and smart, giving you full access to controls without cluttering the screen. Under the hood you’ve got instant uploads to YouTube and MobileMe, as well as a handy HTTP streaming mode for streaming online video.

Why do you want it?

It should be clear: OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is a fantastic evolution of OS X. Between the development of state-of-the-art core technologies and hundreds of refinements, OS X 10.6 will help you get the most out of your Mac with no drawbacks. Get your copy and unleash the power of your Mac!
